Institutional Heritage

History & Background

Sirindhorn International Institute of Technology (SIIT), Thammasat University — Thailand’s premier international engineering institute, established in 1992 through a unique trilateral partnership between academia, Japanese industry, and Thai manufacturing.

Foundation

Sirindhorn International Institute of Technology (SIIT) was established on August 26, 1992 under a Royal Decree as an autonomous academic unit of Thammasat University. The institute was founded through a unique trilateral cooperation among three key organizations:

  • Thammasat University — providing the academic foundation, institutional governance, and degree-granting authority.
  • Keidanren (Japan Federation of Economic Organizations) — providing substantial academic and financial support, drawing on Japan’s world-leading engineering education expertise.
  • Federation of Thai Industries (FTI) — bridging the gap between academia and Thai industry, ensuring graduates meet real-world industrial demands.
Royal Patronage (1996)
“In 1996, His Majesty King Bhumibol Adulyadej graciously bestowed the name ‘Sirindhorn International Institute of Technology’ upon the institute in honor of Her Royal Highness Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn, recognizing its exceptional contribution to international-standard engineering education in Thailand.”

Mission

“To develop professional engineers and technologists of the highest quality through international-standard education and research, serving Thai industry and society.”
